Former Minister, Akobundu, Bags Chieftaincy Title Of Apu Ukwu Ohuhu In A Grand Ohuhu New Yam Festival

The former Minister of Defence State and the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia Central Senatorial district in 2023 elections, Col Austin Akobundu rtd, has been conferred with the chieftaincy title of Apu Ukwu (big Iroko) of Ohuhu in Abia State.

Similarly, the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly and PDP candidate for Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency, Rt Hon Chinedum Orji and the governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Dr Alex Otti were conferred with the titles of Akaraka (Destiny) and Enyioha (Friend of all) by the traditional rulers of Ohuhu.

Speaking at the 2022 Iwa Ji (New Yam) festival of Ohuhu Clan at Umule and Umunso Community Primary School on Thursday, the chairman of Ohuhu Traditional Rulers Forum, Eze Nnamdi Offoegbu said the recipients were honoured because of their outstanding contributions to the development and growth of Ohuhu land.

In his speech after the Chieftaincy Award was conferred on him, Akobundu appreciated the people of Ohuhu for finding him worthy to be conferred with the chieftaincy title and described Ohuhu as “my second home”.

He used the opportunity to reaffirm his commitment towards delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Abia Central and assured the royal fathers that if elected as Senator representing Abia Centarl Senatorial district in 2023 election, he would include them in the scheme of things.

The Iwa-ji Festival is a time of thanksgiving to the Almighty God for making the farms to yield better fruits and also a period to pray for better yields and increase of yam seeds in the next planting season.

The former Minister was a special guest at this year’s Iriji festival of Ohuhu as people from all walks of life who attended the ceremony applauded Akobundu for his contributions and support to Ohuhu sons and daughters.

The Abia Speaker, who also spoke at the event, commended Ohuhu people for giving him such recognition and vowed to always assist them in whatever endeavour he embarks upon. The chairman of the occasion, Ambassador Empire Kanu (Ikoro Ohuhu), emphasised that Ohuhu people will always appreciate those that make valuable contributions to not only Ohuhu people, but humanity as a whole.

The Abia Central senatorial hopeful and entourage had earlier visited a prominent son of Ohuhu (Ikoro Ohuhu) and pioneer Chairman of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Chief Onyema Ugochukwu in his country home and was accorded a rousing reception.

The former minister was accompanied to the chieftaincy ceremony by the Director General of the Austin Akobundu Campaign Council, Pastor Emeka Inyama, Abia State Commissioner for Intergovernmental Affairs, Hon. Obinna Okey, Hon. Ekeleme Ekije and other dignitaries.
