Former Minister of State Defence and the PDP Senatorial hopeful for Abia Central Senatorial district, Col Austin Akobundu rtd on Wednesday attended this year’s International Youth Day in Umuahia in grand style with the former Minister tasking the Nigerian youths to brace up for the challenges ahead by taking active part in governance.
Akobundu who chaired the event whose theme is: “Intergenerational Solidarity, Creating a World For All Ages”, warned against relegating the Nigerian youth to the background as their counterparts around the world are making resounding discoveries.
The Youth day which was organized by the Abia State Ministry of Youth Development, was to celebrate varoius contributions of Abia yoths in Umuahia in line with this year’s International Youth Day held on August 12, 2022.
Speaking as chairman of the occasion, Akobundu asserted that his desires to build a dpendable youth, pointing out that it is the reason he is deliberately pushing for a symbiotic relationship between the dynamism of the youths and the wisdom of the old.
In his words, “Abia youths are the most peaceful, and enterprising. One of my cardinal aim if elected as Senator for Abia Central in 2023 elections is to mentor the youth so that they can contribute their quota to national development. I have always maintained that any administration that is not working out ways to incorporate the youths into its policies and programmes isn’t sensitive to the clamour of the youth.
“My advice to Abia youths is to get involved in politics; a lot of responsibilities lie ahead in front of you and there is no better time to plunge into politics fully than now.
The PDP Abia Senatorial candidate further assured that he will continue to provide significant platforms that will promote the ingenuity of Abia youths, adding that the state has an humongous number of untapped talents that need to be tapped and exploited.
In attendance were: the governor of Abia State, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu represented by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Barr Eze Chikamnayo, the PDP Governorship Candidate for Abia State in 2023 poll, Prof Uchenna Ikonne, represented by his running mate, Barr. Okey Igwe, the commissioner for Youth Development, Barr.Charles Esonu, members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and other youths including some eminent personalities.
Earlier in the day, the PDP Abia Central Senatorial hopeful, Col Austin Akobundu rtd, the Dike Ako N’Mba of Ikwuano, Ochiagha Ukwu of Ngodo, Umunwanwa, had attended the burial of a Community Leader/Evangelist and mother of PDP Chairman in umuahia South LGA, Hon Chinedum Okezie (Jalo) at Amibo, Ubakala where he commiserated with the bereaved family.
