Former Minister of Defence (State) and frontline aspirant for the Abia Central Senatorial seat, under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Col. Austin Akobundu rtd, has emerged as the flag bearer for PDP for the district.
Akobundu polled 186 votes defeating two other aspirants to clinch the ticket. Chief Chuku Wachuku, onetime Director General of National Directorate of Employment (NDE) and Engr. Ugwuzor Ihuoma Chukwuemeka, a businessman, who contested against him, got one vote each.
A total of 190 delegates were pulled from the six Local Government Areas of Abia Central, in line with the new Electoral Act. The PDP has three Ad-hoc delegates from the 62 INEC Wards in the zone as well as one National delegate per LGA.
The PDP Electoral Officer, Elder Amah Abraham, confirmed that two delegates were absent during the exercise, pointing out that no invalid votes were recorded.
According to him, exercise was free, fair, peaceful and transparent.
In his acceptance speech after his victory, Col. Akobundu Rtd. now stands as the party flag bearer for the PDP to face whoever emerges from the other political parties in the 2023.
