Nigeria Mourns As Army Chief, 11 other Military Brass Die In Plane Crash Friday

There was mourning in Kaduna State by 7pm today, Friday, May 21, 2021 as news filtered in over the crash of a Nigerian military plane carrying the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Ibrahim Attahiru and 11 other senior military officers.

There were no survivors.

Though, official confirmation has not been made, people were seen in the metropolis weeping profusely over the death of some prominent sons of the state in the crash, among them is the current Chief of Army Staff.

The reports coming in from Kaduna say the aircraft crashed at the Kaduna International Airport 6pm on Friday. It was said that there was heavy downpour in Kaduna Friday evening leading to the airport being flooded.

Born in Doka Kaduna State on August 10, 1966, Lt Gen Ibrahim Attahiru was appointed Chief of Army Staff on January 26, 2021.

Nigerian Television Authority (NTA ) reporter said that at the break of the news, people were seen rushing to the scene to ascertain those involved as they were not sure who and who were involved as the time of the crash.

however, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, Director of Public Relations and Information of the Nigerian Air Force confirmed the death of the Chief of Army Staff and other military officers.

Gabkwet said in a tweet, @NigAirforce “The crash involving an aircraft occurred this evening near Kaduna International Airport. The immediate cause of the crash is still being ascertained”.
