After six days of dillydally, President Muhammadu Buhari and Command in Chief of the Nigeria’s Armed Forces, has finally appointed the Chief of Army Staff (COAS). He is Major General Farouk Yahaya.
Military sources said Buhari considered the fact he (Yahaya) has been in the theatre of war and therefore knows the terrain too well. But another military source countered it, saying that the President shopped for another Fulani to replace, Lt Gen Attahiru, the immediate past Chief Army Staff who died in a plane crash in Kaduna on Friday, May 21, 2021.
Before his appointment, Major General Yahaya was the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division of the Nigerian Army. He is also the incumbent Theatre Commander of the Counter Terrorism Counter Insurgency military outfit in the North East, code named Operation Hadin Kai.
A statement issued by Brigadier Gen Onyema Nwachukwu, the acting Director, Defence Information said the appointment is with immediate effect.
