During a diplomatic visit of former President of Ghana, Jerry John Rawlings to Nigeria in 1987, hundreds of Ghanaians who thronged the Murtala Mohammed International Airport to welcome their Head of State sang a sonorous and historic refrain that went thus, “J.J Do Something Before You Die; J.J Do Something Before You Die…”. Though the song looked then as ordinary, it became a remarkable rendition that turned things around in later years of Jerry Rawlings’ Presidency.
It was at a time when the economy of Ghana was at zero point; one Naira was almost 800 Ghanaian Cedis. In fact a loaf of bread cost as much 2000 Cedis while other commodities skyrocketed to the rooftops; prompting Ghanaians both rich and poor to seek for greener pastures in other parts of the world. Nigeria became a big brother that accommodated millions of them; majority of them doing odd and despicable jobs; hence derogatory euphuism “Ecowas Girls”.
Interestingly, aware that their President was coming into town (remember he visited Military President Ibrahim Badamosi Babaginda, a fellow Head of State in Nigeria on a diplomatic mission) ordinary Ghanaians took over the airport and despite the tight security put in place, fought their way to the tarmac, and sang that historic song. Today, Ghana sings a different singsong. The millions of Ghanaians who were in Nigeria doing all sorts of odd jobs which Nigerians could not do are back to Ghana, savouring the El-dorado which Jerry Rawlings later initiated in this West African country.
Today, the onus lies on President Mohammadu Buhari to do something before he dies. Lamentably, Nigeria is at the verge of precipice. The economy is terribly bad, corruption is at the lowest index (according to the Transparency International) while insecurity has overwhelmed the country. Could it be that the President is merely sitting by while gunmen from Libya and Syria are taking over the country?
President Buhari, are you part of the alleged conspiracy theory of a grand and orchestrated design to allow these gunmen overrun the country and take over positions in strategic places and thereafter begin to kill prominent citizens in the society particularly southern, middle and Christian dominated areas of the north, while the military looks the other way? Is it true that after the the execution of their assignment, an Islamic republic will be announced and the rest of us will be compelled to turn to Islam by force of arm?
Ironically, the Fulani ethnic nationality is heading the security architecture of the country; beginning from the President of the Federal Republic to the Senate President. Meanwhile, let’s do a random counting.:the Chief Justice of the Federation (Fulani), Deputy President (Fulani), Chief of Army Staff (Fulani), Inspector General of Police (Fulani), Director General DSS (Fulani), National Security Adviser (Fulani), Ministry of Defence (Fulani), Commandant General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (Fulani).
Others are; National Drug Law and Enforcement Agency (Fulani), Director, Military Intelligence (Fulani), Director, National Intelligence Agency (Fulani), Director Naval Intelligence (Fulani), Director Air Force Intelligence (Fulani), Comptroller General, Immigration Service (Fulani), Head of Nigerian Ports Authority (Fulani), Comptroller, Apapa and Tin Can Island (Fulani), Commandant, Murtala Mohammed International Airport (Fulani), Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Commission (Fulani) and other key positions.
Pray Mr. President did you do this to sustain the Peace, Unity and Sovereignty of the Nigerian Nation? Or you made the appointments to test the will of the people, call their bluff and prepare your people for the rumoured onslaught against the rest of Nigeria? This is baffling because even the most sophisticated nations in the world like the United States of America, Russia, China, Great Britain, France, Germany etc run government of inclusiveness to ensure the reign of peace and unity in their domains.
No matter how strong a nation, a state, a city, a community appears to be, civil strife and disobedience could easily put a clog in its wheel of progress; hence the need to ensure that every interest, race, ethnicity is accommodated in the scheme of things in a given country. The USA, as strong and sophisticated as it is, gives room to all races therein and encourages them to access all the facets of its national life. This is why a black man, Barak Obama, could become the President of the United States, a white dominated nation.
Curiously, today the same Buhari and his people are singing the mantra of indissolubility of Nigeria. What an irony. It is only illiterates; cowards and people whose confidence is questionable that can be so behaved, while warning against indissolubility of an entity. Can’t the Fulanis think outside government? Can’t they be in the world stage like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Akinwumi Adesina, Emeka Anyaoku, Wole Soyinka, Chimamanda Adichie etc? Or must they feast on our common patrimony to survive and continues to be nondescript?
The worrisome aspect of the design to hijack Nigeria is the information being extracted from the rumour making the rounds that the federal government by commission or omission is deliberately and subterraneously swelling insecurity in the country. Video clips depicting boko haram/bandits/SWAP/killer herdsmen occupying of some areas unchallenged by the Army, Air Force, Navy, DSS leave some of us, journalists, wondering where the Buhari government is headed to in terms of stopping our own dear country from drifting towards route of counties like Syria and Libya.
For instant, the latest video clip supposedly anchored in Niger State shows the so called bandits forcing some Christian faithful and traditional worshippers to some oath of allegiance. Indeed, according to the clip, their victims were forced to convert to Islam. And those of them that refused were killed. The other day, conventional news channels reported the presence of terrorists near Abuja. It was said they did not only occupy the forest, but hoisted their flags. This is incredible!
In defence, the authorities consistently tell us that there’s no cause for alarm and that the government is fighting insecurity head on. Let it be established on Marble of Wisdom right away that; No Design or Plan to establish Islam as state religion in a country where other religions are in their legions and had preponderantly played major roles towards the ontological growth of this nation , either before or now, SHALL EVER WORK.
Annoyingly, instead of thinking how to import and adopt the Singapore Model, some credulous elements want to drag Nigeria to the medieval age; the stage that has put Syria, Libya, Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq etc; to the circuit of failed states. Singapore rose from grass in the 1960s to grace in the 1980s, courtesy of well some articulated economic plans by a sound, highly dedicated and properly educated economic team. Today, Singapore is not only an advanced nation, but an economic giant. Ironically, all the countries that adopted a particular religion as state religion are all third world countries.
Singapore, it is observed, has a highly developed and successful free-market economy and has made the most of its limited natural and human resources successfully. Its economy depends heavily on exports particularly the consumer electronics, information technology products, pharmaceuticals and on growing financial services. It has enjoyed a remarkably open and corruption-free environment, stable prices, and a per capita GDP higher than that of most developed countries of the world, according to reports by www.geography.org.uk.
Why then has the current Nigerian leadership fail to adopt the Singapore’s Model to put Nigerian economy in the super highway? President Buhari, should do something significant now: direct the military to flush the bandits presently taking root in all forests in this country, failure of which he should resign.
The plan to Islamise Nigeria whether real or imagine will NEVER EVER Work.
