Crisis rocks Labour Party in Enugu, Aggrieved Members Protest Imposition of Guber Candidate

Fresh crisis is currently rocking the Labour Party (LP) in Enugu State following protest by some aggrieved members of the party in the state over the choice of the flag bearer of the party, Chief Everest Nnaji.

This is coming as the 2023 campaign is about to kick off in September this year.

It was gathered that some prominent politicians in the state never expressed interest in Labour Party until Peter Obi emerged as the presidential candidate of the party, a situation that made some aspirants to the various positions believe that winning election under Obi’s party will become a reality.

Last Saturday solidarity rally organized by supporters of Peter Obi further demonstrated the bad blood that has been brewing among Labour Party members over the tussle of who emerged the authentic candidate of the party as the rally was disrupted by supporters of Bar Chijioke Edeoga, who was announced the winner of the repeated primary election immediately Chief Everest Nnaji was announced as the gubernatorial candidate of the party.

Edeoga supporters thereby displayed their displeasure over the announcement chanting that Edeoga was their candidate which disturbed the rally as it took the intervention of security personnel to restore normalcy.

The solitary rally was organized by Nnaji at Shoprite in Enugu.

The rally which was organized by the Nnaji faction of the party in the state, under the aegis of ‘Charity begins at home’ mantra, was believed by many as a plan to officially announced Nnaji as the flag bearer of the party

The Edeoga group filled the venue in anticipation that the Edeoga candidacy was being hijacked while Edeoga was absent at the rally

One of the members of the  Party who spoke on condition  of anonymity expressed disappointment over the incident, describing it as a plan to discredit Peter Obi’s popularity in the state.

According to him, “it’s unfortunate that the Labour Party we’re dying for is not far different from PDP and APC we’re condemning.

“I wonder why Labour Party or whoever sponsoring this crisis will want to impose candidate on us like PDP and APC after we carefully elected Edeoga as the gubernatorial candidate, but we must fight and reject this imposition”.

It was learnt that the two Labour Party candidates, Edeoga and Nnaji struggling to become the flag bearer, contested Primary election under PDP before decamping to Labour Party.

It could be recalled that Edeoga was declared the winner of the repeated gubernatorial primary of the party held in Enugu on August 4, 2022 as the former gubernatorial candidate who emerged during the last Labour Party primary election in Enugu, Casmir Agbo withdrew from the race for the emergence of Edeoga.

This came after several speculations of the withdrawal of the former candidate, Casmir Agbo from the race. It was learnt that Agbo wrote to both the Labour Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), indicating his decision to withdraw from the race.
