Northern Traders Take Over Isigate, Umuahia In Defiance of State Government’s Ban

After heavily investing in the reclamation of Isigate axis of the Umuahia metropolis, Abia State as well as driving out the itinerant traders that constituted some nuisance there, traders have reassembled and reoccupied the place.

A check by the Witness shows that traders from the Northern part of the country have boldly taken over the area; selling items like water melon, onions, potatoes etc without minding the ban on placed trading in the place that serves a gateway into main city.

An inquiry shows that a man that parades himself as the leader of Hausa Fulani in the state, Yaro Danladi allocated the place to them, claiming that he had paid some officials of the Ministry of Trade and Investment huge sums of money to secure the place for Christmas sales.

A source said that the Hausa Fulani traders, using Danladi, as their link man, penetrated the ministry. Danladi was seen at the Eket by Owerri Road on Friday directing affairs as the Northern traders busied themselves with their sales.

The Igbo trades that came around were chased away. One of the Northern traders said, “We were allowed to sell here by big big people in government”, adding that they have the authority to trade there. “If you wan sell here go and collect permission”, he stressed.

At the ministry of Trade and Investment, no official was willing to talk on the issue. One said “everybody has been asked not to embark on street trading particularly Isigate”.
