PDP Council Primaries In Abia: Tension, Anxiety Reign As Thugs Took Charge In Many LGAs

Palpable tension and anxiety have overwhelmed some local government areas of Abia State after the conduct of the just concluded councillorship and chairmanship primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) last Thursday.

It was gathered that some party faithful are accusing some party officials of favouring their chosen aspirants in total disregards to the party’s constitution.

Sources said some aggrieved supporters of some party faithful who were allegedly schemed out during the exercise that produced the councillorship candidates on Tuesday and chairmanship candidates on Thursday decided to unleashed mayhem in some of the councils order to disrupt the exercise.

The intra party squabbles led to the destruction of properties as well as injuring of some people in some local government areas by thugs and hoodlums employed by the opposing camps. However, no life was lost.

In Arochukwu, thugs allegedly hired by a top politician laid siege on the team assigned to conduct the primaries in the area and inflicted several degrees of injuries on the members of the team.

It was said that the politician and his supporters were not in support of the inclusion of some politicians in the team as they alleged that the members of the PDP team meant for Arochukwu would tilt the exercise in favour of a former Senator.

In Isiala Ngwa South, a portion of the secretariat was burnt down because of what a source described as endorsement of a particular aspirant by party leaders at the state and local government levels.

In Aba South and Aba North, it was a cry of woes that rented the air on Friday as party officials at different incidents reportedly disappeared with the ‘ballot cards’ and made some lists of councilors and chairmen in their hideouts and later submitted same to the state PDP secretariat.

This, one of the party officials said, is contrary to the party constitution which stipulates that primaries of the party should be held in the party headquarters or any place designated by the party executive and stakeholders.

In Umunneochi, an aspirant who wanted his name out of print accused the Transition Committee Chairman of hijacking the process and writing the list of councilors and chairman in a hotel room in Umuahia.

In Bende, Isuikwuato, Ohafia, Ukwa East and Ukwa West LGAs, there were protests in the councils as some party faithful alleged foul play in the conduct of the exercise and called for the cancellation of the entire exercise.

Nonetheless, the state of the chairman of PDP, Dr Asiforo Okere on Friday released the list of successful chairmanship aspirants in his office in Umuahia.

 According to the list, Aba North has Prince Chimehilaura Ikonne as chairman, Aba South- Honorable Clinton Ebere, Arochukwu- Prince Dan Kalu, Bende-Emmanuel O. N. Onwuchekwa, Ikwuano-Mpamugo Stephen Abochi, Isiala Ngwa North-Ochulor Chinwendu Victor, and Isiala Ngwa South-Ikechi Anyatonwu

Others are: Isuikwuato-Agbeze Chimaobi, Obingwa-Michael Ibe Nwoke, Ohafia-Dr Ukiwe Okoroafor,  Osisioma-Christian Kamalu N, Ugwunagbo-Mrs Nnata Chinasaokwu Joy, Ukwa East-Hon. Chuks Wabara

Ukwa West has Chief Okechukwu Kanu, Umuahia North produced Njikonye Joseph Ukochukwu while Umuahia South and Umunneochi have Humphrey Chukwudi Benson

Ifeanyi Madu respectively.

The polls to be held on Friday, December 18, 2020 would be conducted by the Abia State Independent Electoral commission (ABSIEC).
