Southeast Governors and leaders in the zone have condemned the continued observance of sit-at-home in the region despite its cancellation by Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) that ordered for it. This is coming as the governors and leaders expressed sadness over the spate of killings in Anambra State.
The governors as well as the leaders therefore vowed to do everything within the law to ensure the enthronement of peace and stoppage of sit-at-home in the region.
In a meeting the governors held with Southeast leaders and security chiefs in Enugu today, Tuesday October 5, 2021, they, after a closed door meeting at the Government House, Enugu, assured that Ebubeagu security outfit will be launched in all the states of the Southeast henceforth.
“All states in the zone are advised to immediately pass the law empowering it before the end of 2021”, the said.
South East Leaders who attended the meeting were: the host Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State, Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma and Rt Hon Ude Oko Chukwu who represented Governor Okezie Ikpeazu. Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano was conspicuously absent.
Leaders at the event include: former Governors, former Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (rtd), National Assembly members from the Southeast geo-political zone, leaders of the religious and traditional institutions from the zone including chieftains of Ohanaeze Ndigbo among others.
At the event, a minute silence was observed for all those who have lost their lives to the security challenges in the country especially in the Southeast zone.
Addressing Journalists at the end of the meeting, the Chairman of the Southeast Governor’s Forum, Dave Umahi said “the governors and leaders of the Southeast condemned the killings in the region and have agreed to join hands with security agencies to stop further killings
“The meeting condemned the sit-at-home orders which are mostly issued by our people in Diaspora who do not feel the pains, the meeting resolved that governors and all people of the south East do everything within the law to ensure that there is no further sit-at-home in the south East and that people are allowed to freely move about in the zone
“The meeting agreed that the Southeast Ebubeagu security outfit be launched in all the Southeast states and laws passed in various south East states begore the end of 2021
“The meeting received the committee report from Ohanaeze on various matters affecting the Southeast, especially on the security and marginalization of the Southeast people ad resolved to study the reports from Ohanaeze worldwide for immediate implementation, and engage with the federal government for amicable settlement of all issues agitating the minds of our people especially the youths.
“The meeting agreed to support security agencies to restore peace in the Southeast as well to support the election in Anambra State as well as directed security agencies to ensure a peaceful election in Anambra State come November, 6th 2021,” he declared.
The Governors used the opportunity to commend all groups and the clergy for their efforts at interfacing with the youths, adding “the meeting thereby mandates our clergy men, Bishops, CAN, Ohanaeze and traditional rulers to continue to dialogue with our youths”.
