The cancelled Umunneochi LGA Abia State will be held today Saturday, December 19, 2020.
Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) had cancelled the chairmanship and Councillorship elections in Umunneochi LGA following massive violence that ensued there before the polls commenced on Friday, December 18, 2020 that .
ABSIEC, in a statement by its chairman, Prof Mkpa Agu Mkpa, explained that the violence started during the distribution of electoral materials at the council’s headquarters. It was learnt that some suspected thugs hired by unknown person unleashed mayhem on LG headquarters, leading people to flee the council.
The one paragraph statement reads: “Following disruption of smooth distribution of electoral materials to polling units by people suspected to be thugs, the Local Government elections in all the Wards in Umunneochi Local Government Area has been called off. The elections will now hold on Saturday, 19th December, 2020, at 8am”.
Meanwhile, the announcement of the Abia State LGA polls, generally seen as peaceful, is expected to be done today, Saturday, December 19, 2020 by ABSIEC authorities. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is being tipped by party officials to clear the polls.
